A Famosa International Triathlon 2006

Don’t know what to say. Overall, it was a great experience. Race wise, it was a disaster. Everything went wrong right from the start.

I was preparing for my bike. While I was pumping the tyre with my hand pump, it just started to leak. One guy nearby asked me if I wanted to borrow his pump. I did and found out that it has been punctured somehow. Asked if I had a spare tube. I said yes, butI didn’t have the tools to change a tyre. He helped to change it for me. I took out the spare tube and found out it is the wrong size! The lady at the bike shop gave me the wrong size. But luckily, we manage to fit it in, but of course we were unable to pump it at a higher pressure.

For the swim, it was pretty intense at the start. Initially I was so stressed up, but luckily kept my cool and continued. The water was not all that clear. I can see my hands once in a while. There was this eerie feeling whenver the water went from cool to warm and vice versa. I forgot to time my swim, but probably it was about 15 minutes or so. I saw the video of myself swimming, and my technique was all off.

Ran to the transition area. Fumbled a little while wearing my singlet. My head went through the wrong hole initially. Pushed my bike out of the transition area. To my horror, the route was so hilly. Although we started and ended at the same point, I swear it felt as though there were more uphill than downhill. We had to do 2 loops. The first time I passed the water station, they gave 100 plus. Some people were already running. The second time I passed, they only gave ice cold water.

Went back to the transition. Hung up my bike, and continued running. I started to feel cramp on my left calf. I picked up the cramp when I got off my bike during the bike leg to push the bike up the hill. I could hardly run the first 1km. Furthermore, the hill didn’t help. After the u-turn at the water station, I started running and didn’t stop till the finish line. I started raining the last 1km.

My time: disappointing 1hr 17mins. My target was 1hr. 2nd last in my category. hahaha.

Won’t be taking part in the Duathlon in KL. Not ready to do the Kenyir Lake Triathlon yet. Next multisport race will most likely be PD Tri in July.
